Web Design and Human Computer Interaction

Image
Internet is an essential part of our modern life. It's taking over a role in our personal and commercial life. Now we buy and sell online, bank online, socialize online and lot more. And when we talk about internet we talk about websites. Website is the media of communicating between human and internet. So it is essential for all the web developers to make sure the websites interact with its users and that is the key to success . There are millions and billions of websites are online but only a few percent of them are successful. When a developer develop a website they have to follow certain rules which we call HCI rules.. Ben Shneiderman is well know among all the web designers for his "Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design". But still in most of the websites the rules are exploited or not properly followed. It depends on web designer how their websites going to look like but the key thing and motive is to interact with the common users. So every websites have to fe

Why Was Google Wave Closed?

Image
Google Wave went dead officially last month with the announcement by Google on their official page that it would no longer pursue development on the Wave but would keep the site on probably till the end of the year. Do you feel a touch of sadness at this decision or not really? Well, for me, I do remember the initial buzz about this product that was generated. With access dished out only through invites, Google had managed to create a curiosity about the product. I had myself received their invite about a couple of weeks after the launch. And I had loved exploring it as with every new technology. But soon the interest dwindled and I can safely say, I hardly used Wave 3 to 4 times in all! So why did Google Wave fail? What went wrong with Google Wave? Why was Google Wave closed? As Google reports on their site, the reason for this decision was the cold response to it. There are a few reasons that this could be attributed to. Brainy idea with no practical use: Google Wave was a collab

Technology in E-Learning

Image
A couple of months ago I registered for a webinar on Web 2.0 in E-Learning. It was hosted by the ASTD, the American society for training and development with two guest speakers from renowned universities . The day of the event I signed in and waited for the webinar to begin; however it all played out differently than anyone had expected. Initially the audience was not able to understand the organizers of the webinar: There was way too much static. After ten minutes of configuration on the ASTD side, the problem had been resolved, the hosts apologized for the inconvenience and we were assured that the system had been tested the night before and everything used to work. Once the guest speakers were introduced and control was handed over to the first presenter, the same problem manifested itself all over again: The audience was not able to understand a single word and in the end it was decided to postpone the session. Around 40 people had just wasted half an hour of their valuable time.

Get a Custom Wrist Pad

Image
If you are someone that sits at a desk for more than 40 hours a week, it's a good idea to get yourself a custom made pad for your mouse. By seeing an expert, they will be able to tell you what needs to be done to ensure that your wrists and fingers are kept in optimal position. Millions of people throughout the world already suffer from RSI, and you want to avoid that statistic; believe me! A lot of people use a pad that has a gel supportive cushion, but in some cases these are not enough. It all comes down to the genetics of the person who is using the computer all day long. I have found that by spending a few hundred dollars on a good set up my ergonomics has improved considerably, and I have had no more problems with pains in my wrists, fingers and also elbows and neck. Even with the best custom wrist pad, a poor quality mouse is going to cause you problems. What this means is that you need to match a high quality mouse with a high quality pad. I would suggest that a mouse which

A Faster Way of Using the Internet

Image
Yes, it is possible to make the Internet faster without paying anything more; and yes, there is safer way of using the Internet as well. What do we have to do to get it? You have to put up with a little bit of a tutorial in how the web works . And then you could be on your way to doing everything in ways that ordinary problems just would not touch. Let's start it this way - the Internet addresses everyone knows and loves - google.com , yahoo.com and so on, are actually not real Internet addresses at all. Imagine what it would look like if your cell phone's phonebook function could only list a bunch of numbers and no names to go against each number. If you were to open your phonebook, you'd see only an endless column of numbers. But that would make little sense because you can't remember numbers well and don't recognize either. The Internet works with a string of numbers just like the phone system does as well. Each 10 digit number called an Internet protocol a
