The service that matches a name to a number is called the Domain Name System.


What happens when sometimes the Domain Name System at your Internet service provider crashes? It happened a couple of years ago in LA. Time Warner's DNS crashed, and everyone thought that the whole Internet had switched off for some major reason. If they had had the numbers of each website they needed to visit, they would never have had a problem.
